Xylem

From manual inspection to AI-driven quality control

Xylem company building
The Challenge

In the production of shafts for submersible pumps, Xylem needs to be able to identify quality defects such as cracks, scratches, pressure marks, and other imperfections. Quality inspections of this type have traditionally been performed manually. Xylem wanted to automate parts of the quality control process and create the conditions to detect defects directly on the production line.

The goal is to reduce the need for manual inspections, lower costs, and further enhance production quality.

The Solution: Cameras, Image Analysis, and AI in Combination

Gimic's solution uses cameras, image analysis, and AI models to automatically identify cracks, scratches, pressure marks, and other defects on the manufactured shafts.

The image analysis takes place directly in production. By automating the inspection, quality defects can be detected earlier in the manufacturing process while reducing the need for manual checks.

Xylem has chosen Gimic's AI-based technology for its production facility in Emmaboda. For Gimic, the project represents a collaboration with a global industrial company with high demands for both quality and efficiency.

Results

From manual to AI-driven quality control

Checks traditionally performed manually can be automated using cameras, image analysis, and AI models.

Automatic defect identification

Cracks, scratches, pressure marks, and other quality deviations can be identified automatically directly on the production line.

Reduced need for manual checks

Automated inspection reduces the need for manual inspection steps in production.

Earlier detection of quality deviations

When inspection takes place directly on the production line, deviations can be detected earlier in the production process.

When AI automates quality control

The project demonstrates how AI-driven image analysis can be used to automate visual quality inspections in industrial manufacturing.

By combining cameras, image analysis, and AI models, Xylem can automate parts of the quality control process for subsea pump shafts. The solution reduces the need for manual checks and enables quality deviations to be identified earlier in the production process.
