The Challenge

Hordagruppen is a Swedish polymer specialist that develops and manufactures components in materials such as plastic and rubber for the automotive industry and other sectors. At the plant in Bor, advanced blow-molded plastic parts are manufactured.

For Hordagruppen, the goal is reliable deliveries with high and consistent quality. As part of developing its quality assurance, the company supplemented manual spot checks with an inspection of every single part. The inspection includes, among other things, the shape of the product and ensuring that the correct amount of material is present in defined areas.

The Solution: Robot, Fixed Cameras, and AI-Based Image Analysis

Gimic's solution combines fixed cameras with robot-based product handling. The robot presents the various surfaces of the part in front of the cameras, and the images are analyzed by Gimic's AI models based on Hordagruppen's defined quality criteria.

The first Gimic unit was purchased in 2018. Now, Hordagruppen is investing in an additional unit for a second production cell. In total, the installations cover three products. In the new cell, a product that combines hard plastic and rubber is also inspected.

By combining cameras, image analysis, and AI models, Xylem can automate parts of the quality control process for shafts used in submersible pumps. The solution reduces the need for manual inspections and makes it possible to identify quality defects earlier in the production process.
